I really like XMPP and it was great on ICQ-times. For a long time i had my own server (ejabberd, openfire and some others). But it was mainly for one or two friends. No acceptance in family, so migrated back to mail and sms and the family to the whole zoo of messengers. I think XMPP was to late when jumping to the phone and the missing webclient is the other point. It's a pitty. Beside some Callmanager- and WhatsApp-Users XMPP hasn't kept pace with "modern" users. So Matrix is a XMPP++ for me. Also many universities in germany are migrating away from xmpp to matrix or rocket.chat (which also uses matrix for federation now...). Not all Standards will last forever I think, sometimes there are new ones, sometimes standards get retired. Anyone using Gopher last week? It's also a standard...
