VR interface for PC games
Someone's made a similar system, DorsalVR for the purposes of using VR controllers as a Wiimote for a Wii emulator (Dolphin), so it's definitely doable - but I don't know of any software for desktop use, yet.
OpenVR driver for turning desktop display into HMD
100% artificial, people use non lighthouse headsets (Quest 2, WMR) with Knuckles all the time, you could definitely just get something like this to emulate a HMD. If you placed a Desktop+ window at the right location you could probably do what OP wants without a headset.
