I've used Imgix on a lot of projects and can't really complain, it's a bit pricey though. If your needs are simple enough you might be able to host your own transform proxy https://github.com/willnorris/imageproxy

I realized after I commented that this was the actual one I'd looked at https://github.com/imgproxy/imgproxy (names are too similar...). I think the self-hosted ones also will cache in memory or disk if you'd rather not setup S3.
