I made a couple imitation old school Gameboy games using Javascript and phaser, using some free sprites from itch.io - it wasnt anything fancy, just a little browser game, but it was fun practice and I was pretty pleased with the result. felt like a pretty low barrier to entry if you wanted to build something basic.
