Proton is open source and is based on Wine which is also open source, so you can check them out yourself to see what they look like. I think they are kinda past the point of any major breakthroughs on proton development that would greatly improve game compatibility, so they kinda are focusing on fixing game bugs and quirks, but don't quote me on that, I might be wrong.
