Personally, I really like using Processing, and building towards students being able to make individual projects that they find interesting (often simple games, but not always). I taught a 1-semester intro class that was open to all grades, and I really like the way it turned out. I'm happy to send you my curriculum for that if you want. (It mostly consists of problem sets ordered in a reasonable way, with a wide variety of difficulties of problem in each set.)
