Playing online is a thing. Most people use roll20.net for that I think, and usually groups have their own self-enclosed discord servers/chat groups/fb groups for players of a particular DM - for handouts, scheduling and stuff. But again, depends on the group - I used a discord server with dice bots for rolling and communication and MapTool for sessions, for example.
