I wasn't aware you could even control brightness on an external monitor on a mac until now. I have Dell monitors on my Mac and always had to fumble with the monitor controls. I did find this though because of your question https://github.com/MonitorControl/MonitorControl so might have to give that a try. My controls are under the monitor and a PITA so I just leave it where it's at.
There’s also Lunar which adds adaptive brightness for external monitors along with native brightness, contrast and volume control.
