In terms of browser extensions: AdBlock requires that you use at least the Malware list, and a good, general-purpose list like EasyList. I think this is the default. FlashBlock is an extremely useful compliment to AdBlock; just whitelist Youtube.com/ytimg.com and any other flash sites that you use regularly. Ghostery, although not as important, is an excellent addition to AdBlock.Web of Trust is useful, especially for those who aren't able to tell if a site has been compromised. While I wouldn't recommend them to family members, you can add HTTPS-Everywhere to your machine and replace FlashBlock with NoScript. These will provide additional protection but may break sites if you don't adjust the settings.
