Reddit was open source until about 6 years ago, so you can actually see how they did it here: https://github.com/reddit-archive/reddit/blob/master/r2/r2/models/vote.py It's written in Python and uses the Pylons framework with SQLAlchemy, but it's not that far off from what you see with Django.
