Free Heroes of Might and Magic 2 (fheroes2) is an open source multi-platform recreation of HoMM2 game engine written with C++ from a scratch is close to is final release. It is playable with a plenty of QoL improvements, high-resolution graphics, improved AI and fixes of the OG flaws.
