Evidently, there's something wrong. Once that you get this solved however, I would suggest you to set up a firewall (e.g. Simplewall) and only allow connections from 10.8.0.0/16 (OpenVPN) so that you never risk similar leaks again. You'd still have to allow things like DHCP and the VPN to go through your regular connection. I've also heard that Mullvad's "Always require VPN" feature only works when the app is open.
