As for the convenience of streaming from phone, I just run Navidrome with my local music collection and use Ultrasonic as the compatible Android app. Works without a hitch.

The original youtube-dl still works fine for downloading music on YouTube on particular (technically supports many sites) , but a good chunk of development has shifted to the fork yt-dlp as of this year due to developer disagreements that hopefully get resolved.
