Slightly on topic, a nice low maintence (other than a daily/weekly backup/scrub script) is mergeFS, combined with snapRaid. The main benefit is you can add and remove drives willy-nilly. It's been stable for me for the past 3 years

After all the 'stable' years with ZFS/OpenZFS I would just not trust 'some new hybrid RAID' implementation ... not to mention all the ZFS features like compression/deduplication/snapshots/clones/copies/bookmarks/send/recv/...

It's proprietary software.
They release the source for any of the licensed components that they use that require source to be made available. Just like Apple does for OS X at https://opensource.apple.com/releases/
The fact that such downloads exist does not mean that the synology software is open source.
Anyone who says otherwise is lying or misinformed.
