I use CCleaner and BleachBit. Use CCleaner every week or so maybe, and then BleachBit once a month or as needed.

for example, instead of using VLC or the built in video player, consider mpv.net which is much lighter, faster and still pretty user-friendly. for music i recommend foobar2000 if you like extensive customization, or xmplay if you just want a dead-simple music player without a bunch of bells and whistles.
