If anyone comes looking for this, I found a tool called hammerspoon which gives a lua scripting interface to a lot of macos functions. Hammerspoon can be used set up A LOT of stuff, but in my case, I can happily set a trigger for screenwake and run my displayplacer command. It's very simple and fun to figure it out so I'm not gonna put the actual script here.
