My naïve assumption was that diagonal FOV was directly related to the horizontal and vertical FOV using the Pythagorean theorem. However, measurements of HFOV, VFOV, and DFOV suggest that the relationship is not that simple (and it's not even close). For example, the HMD Geometry Database lists the Quest 2 as having 104 degrees horizontal, 98 vertical, and 113 diagonal FOV, whereas Pythagoras would say the diagonal should be ~143 deg when calculated using the HFOV and VFOV. That's a huge difference (113 vs. 143 deg). Can someone explain the real relationship between HFOV, VFOV, and DFOV?
