So you've made it to the end. What tools should you be using? The gold standard of encrypted communication is Signal (also see /r/signal. We're friendly over there and happy to answer almost any question). It is simple to use and puts privacy first. Importantly, it does not require any amount of tech literacy to use. My grandma uses it. If you know how to use text, iMessage, WhatsApp, etc, you can use Signal. The next best tool is Matrix, which is a protocol but allows for decentralized and private communications. A server must be set up (requires tech knowledge) but others can join an existing server without much tech literacy. Both have different types of advantages. Being decentralized Matrix has more flexibility and censorship circumvention, but comes at a cost of slower security updates and requisite knowledge. Signal being centralized gets faster security updates but is more easily censored. Both are open sourced.

The Guardian Project also has a variety of apps available that can be of interest to whistleblowers, activists, or people "just" interested in secure internet access and communication.
