I'm not really an expert but I do look into accessibility in most games out of curiosity (and because my bro is colorblind so I gotta make sure he can play what I buy him). Some games allow for the font to be switched to opendyslexic. This is designed to be easily read by people with dyslexia.
I'm a font designer with an interest in game typography, so if anyone wants to pick my brain, ask away!
And if a person embarks on rendering their own fonts with freetype, they will likely need to use harfbuzz for shaping.
