supercollider
An audio server, programming language, and IDE for sound synthesis and algorithmic composition.
First install SuperCollider. Instructions here. It doesn’t hurt to read a little of the documentation and familiarize yourself with sclang, but not totally necessary. I personally can’t really code anything useful in SC directly. But that’s the cool thing, there are many toolkits built on top of SC (Tidal, Foxdot, Sonic-Pi, others…) that simplify the process of writing musical patterns, and give you a runtime so you can evaluate your code on the fly (if livecoding performance is your thing). I like to use Tidal as a compositional tool, and a way to generate endlessly evolving patterns that break the mold of the static 4/4 loop that DAWs and sequencers tend to confine you to. Livecoding isn’t so much of a draw for me personally, but maybe I’ll give it more consideration going forward.
