Using URLs to represent digital assets is one of the major issues with NFTs as they are used today, because the information returned by a URL isn’t guaranteed the same immutability and longevity as the records that are stored on the blockchain. One way people are tying to compensate for this is by using IPFS (which is a peer-to-peer file hosting network), which does guarantee that content returned by a url is immutable (as urls in IPFS are essentially a cryptographic hash of the file they point to), but even that doesn’t guarantee that a file will be accessible forever.
