Why does most sites with modern designs feel bloated compared to ~10 years ago?

  • I think this thread has pretty well diagnosed the root causes, but if I can offer a bit of optimism, with the rise of javascript frameworks that can be 1) statically rendered server side and 2) hydrated with dynamic content client side, I think the tide may be turning. With the right configuration I can build an app today with Next.js that performs like an old style plain HTML site and has the rich functionality of a modern web application. It's the last framework I'll ever need (for now).
