However, your post reads to me like you are only backing up because of the distribution change. If this is the case, I would set up a backup in your place, which you will perform regularly in the future. Because something can always go wrong. For example, an SSD / HDD can become defective very quickly. For this, tools like Borg would be much more useful than rsync, for example.
