That's fair enough, there is alot of information any many lines are missing! Personally (although I say that as someone the likes maps), I do think if you are going smaller places you do need to start with a map. You just can't assume that a town/village has a reasonable rail service in the same way. Personally I like https://www.openrailwaymap.org. How I'm going to get in & around is for me the first thing I look at, before I properly work out what I can do there, that doesn't have to be trains for me though, buses are fine as well, even infrequent ones if they run at reasonable times, or if things are close by and the network poor hiring bikes for the week, sometimes bringing them in on the train from elsewhere.
