Not sure if this is helpful, but I am running a k3s cluster on 4 raspberry pi's with 4Gb of memory each with no issues, however resource usage is always a consideration. Here are some opinions: 1. Do you need Rancher? Genuine question as I don't use it and not sure what benefits it brings. The thing seems memory hungry and redundant at this scale. I might be wrong though. I installed my k3s using ansible and that installation is quite lean.

Fair enough. I would recommend Kubernetes up and Running book, was following it at the beginning and it was quite helpful. Kubectl is not super complex, mostly just a bit annoying and takes a bit of time to get used to. There is also a middle ground that quite handy and uses no resources of your cluster - k9s.
