I've been using winbuddy for years and I know I've seen other users of this subreddit talk about it. Between macforge randomly failing and the window borders getting stuck, making fullscreen videos in firefox impossible, winbuddy was almost not worth the trouble just to have some nice linux style borders.
I was looking into the yabai window manager because I know you can get borders that way too, even though I'm perfectly happy with my current WM. I found in the issue tracker that somebody had made a program called limelight, which is just a port of the old functionality of yabai's border system which has now changed. You can install limelight by itself without yabai and simply get active/inactive borders with a simple config file to change colors. No more recompiling every time you want to change colors, and no more fullscreen issues. It's not perfect, sometimes borders can get stuck for a sec before correcting themselves, but it's a hell of a lot better than winbuddy. It is possible using limelight to hide the rounded corners that Big Sur unfortunately put on every single window.
