My $0.02: Google loves killing useful projects that don't make them a lot of money (https://killedbygoogle.com/). Google Voice has been basically dead and/or on life support for years, with no new features or changes (other than to take away the ability to forward SMS to a linked phone number because "spam" - requiring use of their app or web site). It's likely the only reason they haven't killed the service entirely is because so many people use it as their primary means of contact and it would look really bad - in the news, raise the ire of the FCC or Congress, etc.
