Aesprite makes their source code available on GitHub under the terms of their EULA. I’m not a lawyer and this is not legal advice, but the terms to my understanding mainly prohibit end-users from distributing compiled copies of the code. Those with the know how to compile their own copy can grab the source and do so. That’s how I used it to try before buying. Even for folks not super well versed in C/C++, you can pretty much Google your way out of any errors you hit during the compile. It’s a pretty sweet deal, and definitely contributed to me buying a license.
