Good luck with Debian as your daily driver! Not related to your comment itself, but check out fish as an alternative to using bash as your interactive shell. It's deliberately not POSIX-compliant, which means I wouldn't use it for shell scripts you intend to share with others, but that decision means it was able to make some design changes that make it more consistent and generally a nicer interactive experience.
