Ha! I also bind M-r to ctl-x-map and also think it's still too much typing for registers! So I wrote a pair of commands for registers that I use instead: store-register-dwim and use-register-dwim.
u/dmendler saw our conversation here and thought about how to improve the store-register-dwim command. I really like what he came up with, which is the new consult-register-store command in Consult. He also added a consult-register-load command, which is the same as the use-register-dwim command I showed you, so I'm going to remove those functions from my configuration and use the consult ones instead (not the first time I've been able to do that!, I used to have my own inferior versions of consult-line, consult-completion-in-region and consult-yank).
