I know for me there is one though it is not specifically "core" but kind of is in a way when you are using a desktop...namely email of all things. Gnome comes with the abomination that is Geary and that thing is way too under powered. For me, I would love it if something like Mailspring (https://getmailspring.com/) was packaged up and made it in as the default email client in the new and improved DE. Modern take on email is something that does seem to be lacking but email is still here and is kind of very important.
