It's maybe a bit easier than you think! I started with a photo, edited it with photoshop, then processed it using the DrawingBot software Thanks to github user SonarSonic. It took me several attempts to get the final, but with some experimenting with the DrawingBot settings, going back and forth to photoshop, then back to inkscape, I split the image into 3 layers for the different colors and I'm pretty happy with the result.
