You're likely correct about the performance, but I think it's still a move in the right direction. As the core devs of Godot (Linietsky in particular, IIRC) have noted in the recent past, driver support for OpenGL gets less and less love from major graphics vendors every year. This probably won't impact an application as simple as desktop composition for many years, but it's a sign of things to come. On the scale of change goodness, with one end being "valid future-proofing" and the other being "an unnecessary flex", I would peg this closer to the former than the latter.
