I think this is interesting. I started https://github.com/emdash/udlang last year, during the shutdowns. It is also, conceptually, a pure functional "superset" of JSON, but it does suffer from lack of a solid footing in type-theory, plus bit of "scope creep" and "values drift" on my part.
Probably the easiest way to explain this is to compare to Dhall which is similar to Grace in that everything is also an expression, but Dhall does let you define type synonyms using let. For example, this is valid Dhall code:
