How can I transition into a more distributed systems role?

  • I would say this is how it works. Atleast it worked for me. 1. Really be aware of how these systemw work under the radar. Designing data intensive applications book helped me a lot with this. 2. Start out with understanding smaller projects dealing with these concepts, probably start with something at your work. I started with 2 very simple project, one is available online called registrator(not really a dsitrubuted system) and another is a proprietary system I used with one of my employers. 3. Try and see if you can contribute to some important open source projects, do some CR, enhancement, feature, bugs anything. Or even plain documentation to get the exposure. 4. The best way to get a job done properly is doing it yourself. So as a last step start thinking of doing something on your own.
