Here is the code of the prototype: https://github.com/dalboris/vpaint , and here is (the very beginning of) the code for the final product: https://github.com/vgc/vgc. Inkscape folks are already aware of this :) It's really not obvious to add to Inkscape though, which is why building a new product makes more sense. It also makes it possible to build a custom UI which works really well with the new data structure. Although adding some of it to Inkscape would definitely be nice too.
