you should try MPV, its like the final boss of Media players. (If GUI is a big deal for you, you can add it. My favourite one is this https://github.com/cyl0/mpv-osc-morden-x
Everything feels snappier, as in new files load and play instantly, the huge amount of hotkey functionality where every operation happens immediately, and subtitle files are loaded onto screen the instant you swap to them even if it's in the middle of a line. The hotkey stuff is great, as you can have them do about anything you want, pan the video, change audio and subtitle timing, change display settings, as well as custom hotkeys like seeking forward specific amounts of time. It's also supports user scripts. For example, I use one that hooks subtitles to an empty web page and allows you to create Anki flashcards with a sound clip and screenshot from whatever line you select.
HC has a fork that is still maintained by another dev, here is the github.
I think SMPlayer is the most popular and easy to use one, but it looks ugly as hell. mpv.net seems to be the next most popular and it looks just like the regular MPV with more features built into the GUI. Glow is a simple alternative to make your own config to control features, but I don't know if that is more customizable than VLC. Generally, if you want something specific, you do it yourself with MPV.
