The goal of Pushpin is to provide a generalized solution for the "stream server thing" that many companies build when they need to provide an API that pushes data in realtime. Companies like Twitter, Dropbox, Uber, and others all build these custom proxy/gateway things. Doing this is a lot of work, and none of these projects are reusable.
I came up with the idea for Pushpin after working as CTO at a previous startup, where - you guessed it - we built a stream server thing.
Recently, we've made significant progress on performance. We've benchmarked over 1 million connections on a single server: https://github.com/fanout/pushpin-c1m
