I stumbled upon owntone which claims to be able to do what I want. However, despite the claims in the doc, my chromecast (neither my AVR nor an actual chromecast) showed up in the list of clients and I'm unable to make it work.
If you're on Linux, you can use pulseaudio-dlna to send audio to Chromecasts. From there, you can point a snapcast client to the Chromecast audio device.
