Unfortunately, I don't think I have any concrete contemporary discussion on this because the conversation on "keep the status quo" doesn't seem to have been recorded anywhere. At best, I will point to the fact that I am an active dune developer and that this very subject (the .exe suffix) was discussed as recently as two months ago.
