yes git-scm is a legit or trusted , while https://github.com/git/git is the actual source of the codebase and utility. not using git from the command line only real downside is lack of platform compatability. Git the command line utility is the same on all command lines, the application github-desktop varies slightly across it's supported platforms. And it won't help you at all in the majority of working environments which are desktop less terminals.
