INSTEAD - Simple Text Adventure Interpreter

  • OK. Let's start here. If it interests you, we can move it to a separate post. As for me, I prefer the world modeling method as presented in the INSTEAD Engine. (A documentary novel for an introduction). Everything is object-based and consists of reactions to events. You can inspect an object, pick it up, drop it, attach one to another, put it in your inventory, retrieve it, and so on. You can move around locations (named rooms, also objects) and you can engage in dialogues with NPCs (yes, objects). This is a very flexible method of constructing undefined storylines if your game needs it. It turns out a kind of theatrical production, where each actor is given some freedom to improvise within the general outline of the plot.
