Discover the best way to get started contributing to Open Source projects

C++ used to dominate the industry in the 80's and 90's, but for the last 15 years C# and Java have ruled. I'd recommend C# as there's simply plenty more openings for C# than C++. Plus, C# is, in my opinion, easier to use than C#. With C# you get more libraries to make your life easier. SQL is a must. Any Developer who can't read/write SQL won't get anywhere. In order to land a Developer role, you need either a CS degree, or experience. How you get the experience is up to you; e.g., I got my experience by working for free for companies in exchange for experience, and I used that experience to build a portfolio. Other ways to get experience are to contribute to open source project; e.g., www.codetriage.com has hundreds (might be thousands) of open source projects, in which anyone can jump in and fix code. You can then use this to build a portfolio of evidence.
