Personally, at the moment I use Solus on desktop and notebook. Independent distro built from scratch, rolling release ("install once, update forever), more up to date software compared to debian based distros, incredibly fast. Biggest downside: Small distro, by far not as much packages available compared to feg. Ubuntu.
That said: Ubuntu is used by many people, has really much software, a great community and is in general very beginner friendly. If you want those advantages, I'd go with any of the hundreds distros based on it, but would not use Ubuntu itself. My favorite one would be elementary.
