u/iceman2001 has great instructions on GitHub. I personally used Kali Linux on a usb stick (with persistence) and had no issues. I've also done it with a raspberry pi before (don't remember what os) and similarly had no issues. Make sure you disable modem manager (marked "very important!" in the instructions) and don't mess around with it while it's flashing, and you shouldn't have an issue with bricking.
