IMPORTANT: due to a drive failure, as of 13-Mar-2021, the Mercurial repository had to be re-mirrored, which changed every commit SHA. The old SHAs and trees are backed up in the vault branches. Please migrate to the new branches as soon as you can.
It supports voice and video calls, and you use it on your own server (like prosody.im and ejabberd.im). It's also really simple to get a user to create an account on a server you run/a public one and.... it does not require a phone number or an email address.

conversations.im is a open-source, privacy focused and secure messaging app, that implements OMEMO (which is Signal protocol adapted for XMPP). I won't say it's non-profit as the guy leading the project does it as his own full-time job.
