Fido is just icomplete. I am not sure how intrusive the modifications to icomplete are and there are some minor bugs in fido-mode, e.g., see https://github.com/minad/consult/issues/57. My recommendation would be to rather use icomplete-vertical which is a better fit and also supports Marginalia annotations.
What you said is wrong. Please look at the evidence. https://github.com/emacs-helm/helm/commits/master I see 35 commits in the last 3 weeks, including 5 in the last 2 days. The repo is not locked. It is clearly not abandoned.
Are you using Selectrum by any chance? Selectrum is a slightly nonstandard completion UI so Embark doesn't work completely right with Selectrum out of the box. Use the configuration from the Selectrum wiki.
