Nowadays I use pass for handling secrets. It's simple, backed by git (which makes backing up and version control trivial for me), and integrates well with my yubikey. There is a lot of support for it in various tools, like browser extensions and Ansible lookups.

The other shitty thing is dealing with storage. For a single node it's easy; use local-path or host-path. But if you want to have multiple nodes you have to have something that is more distributed, like longhorn.io. I am not sure what the best answer for self-hosters is for that.
