I know of matrix.org and they would support everything with rooms etc. but I do not need Federation etc. In fact I do not need a whole lot of stuff that matrix offers, it seems overkill to me. Also I am really struggling with their docs and integration possibilities. The chat is not the main part of the app, this should be simple and integratable with the already existing backend. In fact, it could be called from the proprietary existing app backend so it wouldn't even have to care about authentication etc.
