I'm still reading the post but, users: as an alternative to the fdroid repo option, I myself get the apk directly from your (QuantumBadger's) github via Obtainium (https://github.com/ImranR98/Obtainium), which uses the github releases as a repo. This includes automatic update checking. I prefer this to the fdroid repo anyway, as the developer builds the app from source, not fdroid building it, which removes a potential and theoretical attack vector.
Extensions like Thredd (still works but is abandoned now just like Reddit Check extension of mid 2010s it shared inspiration from). Even Reddit's first extension (late 2000s, early 2010s) seemed to have basic similar functionality but Thredd is possibly the best version of it since it can find Website links that are shared in Reddit Thread's Comments section, not just only Reddit Post Links.
On Firefox there is Newsit & Reddit Checker.
Promnesia & theconversation.social were on similar themes/solutions.
I don't know that there's been a separate repository set up yet, but when it is, it will be linked from https://github.com/QuantumBadger/RedReader or https://redreader.org/alpha
